June 5, 2020 is World Environment Day!  If you are new to World Environment Day, you should know it takes place every year on June 5.  This year it is being hosted by Colombia with a focus on biodiversity.  It is a day that has been observed since 1974, and over the years the celebration has been adopted by more than 100 different countries around the world.

What is World Environment Day?

This celebration takes place every year, and it is the United Nations’ flagship day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment.  To date, it is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is observed by millions of people all around the world.

In 2020, Columbia will be hosting the celebration, in collaboration with Germany.  Their focus is biodiversity, because as Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of the UN Environment Program emphasized, there are more than one million species of plants and animals that are facing extinction. With that in mind, there has never been a better time to focus on the importance of biodiversity around the world.

Fun Ways to Celebrate World Environment Day

You can get involved with World Environment Day in some simple but effective ways.  You don’t have to go to a big celebration or feel left out if there is nothing planned locally.  Some simple ways to celebrate include:

Plant a tree. Planting a tree in your yard doesn’t just beautify your space.  Trees work to absorb odors and gasses and filter particulates out of the air.  Additionally, when you plant a tree in your yard, the shade it can provide can cut down your need to use air conditioning by 50%!  When you cut down on the demand for energy, you are reducing carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions from power plants.

Recycle.  Starting right now, make a plan to recycle.  The more every individual engages in recycling behaviors the more we cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.  Every time we choose not to recycle paper, plastic, metal, and glass products we are contributing to greenhouse emissions. Are you doing your part?

Volunteer. While social distancing will have an impact on World Environment Day this year, you can volunteer to help better our environment.  See if your National Park Service is looking for volunteers for specific projects.  Or, just go to your local parks, beaches, or wooded areas and clean up what you can.  You don’t need a planned initiative to make a difference.
