Prepping your Lawn and Landscape for Spring

The Early Bird Catches the Worm!

Amid winter, when the world is dark and gloomy, most people write-off their lawn and landscaping as a lost cause.  After all, who wants to work outside when you can be cooking a pot roast and hibernating indoors?  The answer… We do – and so should you!

Not only is it refreshing to get out in the fresh air and vitamin D, but the early bird catches the landscape worm.  Now is the prime time to take those early steps to lead you into a rocking spring. In fact, starting now will make the lawn around your home the prettiest on the block.

Over the next few weeks, we will talk about what you can do to prep and get ready for the return of the sun in all its glory. So, put that pot roast in the crockpot and join us outside to get your spring prep on!

Always Start with a Visual

Before you even begin, take a picture of your space.  Why?… you ask?  Because as everyone knows, kids and pictures never lie.  So, its always a good idea to take a picture of your home each season to see how it looks from the street. As such, this helps you see where you may need to make adjustments.  Should your picture reveal some landscape issues you hadn’t noticed, don’t panic! Just give us a call and we’ll help refresh and update your space in no time! Ok – now that you have your starter picture, let’s get to our first step in spring lawn care prepping.

Treat Your Lawn First

Step one in this process is treating the lawn.  While this step seems less flashy and exciting than planting – it’s essential to success.  Fertilizer is like the night cream you put on before bed.  Kind of a chore and not super flashy, but it sure makes you pretty in the morning.  In the winter, when your lawn is sleeping, it’s the perfect time to put on the treatments that prep it for a pretty wakeup.

How do we prep our sleeping lawn?  We start by attacking the harmful insects in your landscape.  Sadly, your lawn looks peaceful right now, but all those insects that love a Houston summer have also been hibernating through the winter and will awaken soon to wreak havoc.  Right now, only the eggs need to be dealt with so it’s the great time to nip them in the bud while they are vulnerable. The easiest and best way to do tackle this is to apply a Horticultural Oil over your lawn and landscape.

Next, Do Some Necessary Shopping

Time to shop! Head to your local nursery where you can find the oil.  It’s applied via a sprayer, so you’ll want to pick one up at your local home improvement store. Once you have your supplies and are ready for insect warfare, it’s time to act!  We recommend you spray the Horticultural Oil over your entire lawn and landscape so that it will coat everything in the yard, especially the insect eggs – which will suffocate and die in the process.

If the winter has been warm, you can also add a little insecticide to the treatment and get the last of your winter insects taken care of.

Now You Can Relax a Bit

After you’ve treated your lawn with fertilizer and went to get any necessary supplies to treat insects, put away your supplies and rest easy. You’ve taken care of the most important things for now in prepping your lawn for success. The night crème is on and now your lawn can get some beauty sleep in peace!

Next time we will talk about Brown Patch and how to identify and treat it. Keeping your lawn beautiful and ready for the spring is the gift that keeps on giving. Start planning your next spring bash with confidence because a little work each week will get you prepped for the Rodeo BBQ of your dreams.
